Region of Durham

For more than 40 years, Region of Durham has been home to a wealth of energy expertise and infrastructure, combined with progressive government, and a knowledgeable and supportive host community. Research and development capabilities are led by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) engineering and science programs, unique in Canada.

Durham Region is Ontario’s Energy Capital, producing over 30% of the province’s electricity from its two nuclear generating stations operated by Ontario Power Generation.  This historic energy generation role has led to the development of a strong energy industry cluster.  Durham companies represent the full energy cycle, including production and transmission, distribution/demand-side management and conservation, equipment and technology development, manufacturing and services, and research and training.   The Region boasts a highly educated and skilled energy workforce, one of the largest in Canada.  UOIT, Ontario’s newest university, and Durham College focus on energy programs, research, and operations and are leading institutions in this field.
